10 Types of Businesses That Prosper in Recessions

by David Ferrers

I keep hearing that times are tight, business is tough and money is scarce, so I thought I’d give you my top ten list of businesses that will certainly do well over the coming months and years. And also give you the reasons why they’ll prosper.

1. Uncertainty – many companies currently feel uncertain about what to do to survive and prosper.

They want solutions, they want to be told what to do and how to do it.

The market for information products is better than ever.

2. Turmoil in market places creates change. Established ways of doing things will often cease to work.

Businesses need to be flexible. They need operating systems that will work in this new climate.

The market for effective operating systems is ripe for exploitation.

3. Change – when markets change marketing methods must also change. Those who go on using marketing methods inappropriate to the times will fail.

Those who adapt and find new ways will prosper.

There are excellent opportunities for creative marketing services that can find new customers for businesses. Strategy, direct mail, advertising, telesales, web sites can all do well now. But they MUST be highly creative.

4. Cost-cutting – business expenditures are under pressure, businesses need to save money.

The demand for products and services that can save businesses money is going to grow and grow over the coming months and years.

5. Morale within companies experiencing downturn is failing, this will have a deleterious effect on corporate performance.

There is a need for morale boosting and good leadership products like coaching, mentoring and business education.

6. Performance – in order to survive companies need to perform better. They need better qualified staff delivering higher quality products and services.

The need for training products is paramount – books,
videos, seminars and courses will sell well – provided the quality is good.

7. Research – businesses need to find good markets for their products. They need to know what people want and how they want products to be delivered.

There will be an increasing demand for market and consumer research services.

8. Consumers will want different types of products for the changing environment in which we all now have to live.

We still want to enjoy our lives, but we have less disposable income, so what sort of products will we be prepared to spend our money on?

The demand for research and development will grow steadily over the coming years so that businesses can develop products that consumers will buy.

9. Loyalty – customers are like gold dust. Businesses need ways to stay close to their customers, to keep them spending money

and to make sure they don’t change their allegiances and go to other suppliers.

The market for customer communication products like autoresponders, good copywriters, “good feeling” creators and customer loyalty products will be excellent.

10. Direction – businesses need to think clearly about their direction. They need to know the key questions about their future and most of the answers.

They need to check out their assumptions.
They need to look for “nasty surprises” that may occur.
They need to know where opportunities may exist.
They need a vision for their future. They need strategies to make their visions become realities.

The market for “think tank,” “future gazing” and consultancy services will be excellent.

There will also be a multitude of similar opportunities for helping ordinary consumers in the months and years ahead.

I am very excited about the number of different ways to make money that exist today and about the future prospects for business.

If you are thinking about starting a business right now is a great time to get going. Remember what I said about business education – everyone needs it right now. I currently employ the services of one coach and one mentor to help me keep ahead of the race.
