Management

As each decade passes the speed with which business and business techniques develop seem to accelerate at an ever-increasing rate. To keep abreast of everything that is going on and to manage effectively the modern manager must keep educating and re-educating him or herself.

The books on this page represent just a few of the books that both I and my clients have found useful in keeping our careers both exciting and productive.

management coaching made simpleManagement Coaching Made Simple by David Ferrers
In this handbook I demonstrate how good managers adopt a coaching style to improve the performance of members of their teams. Over the years I have noticed that managers who are too dictatorial tend to stifle the development and performance of those they seek to lead. Other managers go too far the other way and molly-coddle their teams, often doing most of the work themselves. This short handbook will show you how to adopt a good balance between dictatorial and molly-coddling.

getting to yesGetting to Yes by Roger Fisher & William Ury
This is the best book on negotiation that I have so far managed to find. It shows you how to get the other person to agree with you and give you what you want without making a life-long enemy of them. Negotiation is a management skill that all leaders should develop so that they can achieve their goals without causing friction.

never eat aloneNever Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi
Networking is an essential skill for any ambitious manager. It isn’t just a matter of meeting lots of people, going to lots of events, owning a massive address book. It is a matter of knowing the RIGHT people. People you can trust to help you when you need help of different types and people whom you can help so that you don’t feel indebted to them. This is without a shadow of doubt the best book on networking out there.

influence - the psychology of persuasionInfluence – The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini
It is essential for ambitious managers to know how to have their point of view prevail in discussions. Dr. Cialdini has produced a book that will show you how to change people’s opinions subtly. This is a “must read” book for anyone in the marketing and advertising industries.

the seven habits of highly effective peopleThe Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
It is almost impossible to resist the title of this book. We all want to be more effective in all areas of our lives and Stephen Covey has found a way to show us how we can join the ranks of the most effective people. I see this book on office bookshelves of countless Chief Executives.

the e-mythThe E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber
Michael Gerber’s theme is a simple one, but in a way that is what makes it so effective. When I first read the book I thought it had been written especially for small business owners or those thinking of starting a business. True it is essential reading for small business people BUT it is also a very valuable lesson for large business people, as I have repeatedly found in my coaching work.

the one minute managerThe One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard
If there has to be an all time number one book on management this has to be it. It is especially valuable to young managers starting out because it is easy to read yet makes powerful and important points in a way that makes them hard to forget. Every young manager to whom I have recommended this book has valued it highly.
