Personal Development
It is my personal belief that personal development is a lifetime’s work. As we go through life we change, the world around us changes, lifestyles change and work practices change. We need to grow and adapt in order to meet the challenges that we have to face. We need to keep educating and re-educating ourselves to meet these challenges and also to keep pace with those we love and those with whom we work.
On this page you will find a few of the books that I have used to educate myself to help me through the travails of life. They are all books that I have found helpful.
Self-Confidence Made Simple by David Ferrers
Self-confidence is so often the missing piece that prevents people from achieving all that they are capable of achieving. A lack of confidence is a performance inhibitor in my clients of all ages and all at all levels of management. The problem with self-confidence is that it comes and goes with different situations and different people. Once I discovered effective ways for people to boost their confidence at will, in any situation, the performance improvements in my clients was remarkable. It was my clients who persuaded me to write this handbook so that others could benefit as they have done.

In this book Tim Laurence explains how the Hoffman process helps people to discover more about themselves and, more importantly how to do something about the bad programmes that are holding you back. Highly recommended.

Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
This was the first personal development book that I ever read back in the 1970′s. It made an enormous impact on my life because it showed me, for the first time, that I could actually influence my own thoughts and feelings in a very positive way and thus change my life.

The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck
Dr. Peck’s beautiful book has been at the very top of the personal development best sellers lists for several decades. It is bought by so many people because it speaks so eloquently to those who are lucky enough to journey along this road with such an inspirational figure to lead them.

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
This was one of the first popular personal development books to advocate “mind discipline” as a key to personal development. It has such a wealth of references to successful people that one cannot help but believe that the recommendations are worth your efforts. And in my experience they are.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
This is probably the book that most of my clients have on their bookshelves. There is a deep-rooted part of human nature that feels the need to belong amongst our fellow men. At the same time we all like to think that we can influence others. This book will show you how.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
It is almost impossible to resist the title of this book. We all want to be more effective in all areas of our lives and Stephen Covey has found a way to show us how we can join the ranks of the most effective people. I see this book on office bookshelves of countless Chief Executives.

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
This is not one of the easiest books to read and is only recommended for those who really want to understand and develop their ability to use their “alternative intelligence”. It is well written and once you get into the narrative you will learn a great deal to your advantage.

Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins
By the most famous NLP speaker in the world who has influenced the lives of literally millions of people. This is an inspiring book which has much to recommend it. There is too much “hype” for my liking, but it has undoubtedly helped many of the people with whom I have come into contact.

The Man Who Listens to Horses by Monty Roberts
Why a book about horses in this section? Because Monty Roberts has a knack of persuading others to do his bidding – horses certainly, but people also. This is a book that is worth reading if you are serious about wanting to understand how to get people to follow you – and horses.

Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins
This is probably less popular than the NLP master’s other tome Awaken the Giant Within (see above), but it is possibly better for those who want to teach themselves the techniques that he advocates for developing your ability to achieve your goals in life.
