What is the best way to get customers for my business?

Discover how to get customers for your business - Meaningful Answers blog by Life Coach David FerrersWhen you really know your customer everything you communicate about becomes a like a personal letter to that person. It becomes much, much easier to communicate with your target audience.

Notice that I said, “know your customer,” singular. It is very important that you see your customers as a tribe of very similar people. You need to know the queen bee in that tribe intimately. Once you establish that relationship everything you say will be influenced by your desire to build a closer relationship.

In a way successful marketing is about building a loving relationship between you and your queen bee.

Defining Your Customer

Your relationship with your customer starts with you defining who this person is.

The first step is to ask yourself, “who needs my product or service?” Write down your answers to

questions like these that will help you to visualise your customer:

“Who have I seen buying a product like mine?”

“Who have I noticed enjoying a service like mine?”

“Who have I seen at seminars or workshops about a product like mine?”

“Who have I seen at places where people buy products like mine?”

“Who have I seen buying or reading books about products like mine?”

Get Even More Precise Details About Your Customer

Once you have a rough idea who your queen bee is you need to get more specific about her. Write down your answers to these questions:

“How old is she (he)?

“Where does she live?”

“What does she enjoy?”

“What sort of work does she do?”

“What hobbies does she pursue?”

“What are her tastes in food?”

“What sort of TV programmes or movies does she watch?”

“Is she single, married, in a relationship?”

“Is there something specific that gives her life meaning?” This is a key question because this will be a particularly hot positive emotion button with her.

“Is there something specific that she needs.” Read the previous article about How To Turn What You Love Into a Brand paying particular attention to the section on the Two Types of Motivation That Drive Customers.

Making Your Customer a Real Person

You now need to make your customer into a real person. What I do is to find someone whom I already know who has an exactly parallel profile to the one I created when I did the exercises above.

I then study what she does, what she likes, her taste in food, her hobbies and relaxation activities, what she wears etc. I go on thinking about that person until I feel that I really understand and know her like a best friend. Once I even went so far as to take a queen bee out to dinner so that I could find out more about her by talking to her. I told her what I was doing and she joined in the fun. As I paid the bill she told me that she had uncovered a lot about herself that was valuable to know.

Discover how to build relationships with your customers - really get to know your customers so that you can communicate with them persuasively to get them to buy your product or service - Meaningful Answers blogGet Intimate With Your Customer

Write a love letter to her or him. You will never send the letter, but it will help you to find words that express the benefits of your product or service that are credible and persuasive. (I will tell you more about how to write persuasive copy in later articles.)

Finish your letter with a call to action. Find a way of persuading your customer to satisfy their need by doing something you want them to do.

Above all it is important to be a real live, friendly, helpful human being when you communicate with your customer. Make sure that what you do is fun and enjoyable. People are more open, more relaxed, more easily persuaded when they are having fun.

The entertainer Bruce Forsyth had a magical ability to persuade people to do daft things on television. His subjects would actually enjoy acting the fool and being a source of laughter for the audience. He got people into this state by quickly making them feel “at home,” relaxed and part of an enjoyable occasion. It is your task to do the same with your customers.

As I said at the beginning, “When you really know your customer it becomes much, much easier to communicate with them and persuade them of the benefits of your product or service so that they buy from you.”

When you offer someone something that they need in language that is their language, they will buy from you. The key is to really know your customer.

What To Do About Career Frustration

Discover what you can do to overcome frustrations at work and build a successful careerThere is a lot you can do about feeling frustrated about your career and how much you earn. Let’s go step by step through the process that many others have followed with success.

The first important point is that your feeling of frustration is a negative feeling. This is not all bad because your frustration gives you a strong motivation to move on from your current situation. However, this is what I call “away motivation,” it will only motivate you away from your current situation. It will not propel you towards the much better career path that will give you work satisfaction and earn you more money.

Know Thyself

This aphorism was widely used by the ancient Egyptians and Greek philosophers like Plato. So it has a strong wisdom pedigree. But, how do you get to know yourself and why is this important?

The answer is to observe yourself, to get to know what you love to do. Make a note of the times when you feel especially happy, what’s going on? Notice when you feel a sense of achievement, what are you doing when that feeling arises?

You may be aware that your energy levels go up and down during the day. Sometimes you feel lethargic or bored, and any sort of activity seems to require a special effort. Yet there are other times when you feel full of beans, you actively seek out things to do. What made you feel that way? What happened just before you got that surge of energy? These are key moments in self-understanding because they tell you what you love to do.

Why Loving What You Do Is The Key To Career Success

When you love what you do you are filled with purpose and energy, you can’t wait to get down to work. The work is intellectually stimulating, challenging and rewarding. At the end of the day you have a sense of having done something meaningful with your life.

Loving what you do is very similar to loving another person. You get the same surges of energy. You have the same desire to be closely engaged with what you do. You look for opportunities to please your colleagues and clients.

Can you see how being in love with what you do would be completely different and much more life-enhancing than the frustration that you feel at the moment?

I have coached over one thousand people during the last twenty five years. Many of these clients initially suffered from career frustration which they have managed to transform into career satisfaction. I regard the ability to make this transformation as so important to our sense of well-being and happiness that I have written a book about it which is available on Amazon. It was reading books like this one that started me on the journey from a corporate career that was becoming increasingly frustrating to starting my own business thirty years ago.

How To Ensure That You Choose The Right Career

Like many others I started my personal journey to career satisfaction by doing research, Googling, reading books, blogs and magazine articles. All of this was helpful because it gave me the belief that it is possible to build a more rewarding career and create a better life for yourself.

However, I did not manage to take the important steps towards a better life until I started working with other people. The reason for this is quite simple. When you work on your own you tend to go on asking yourself the same questions, like, “what would I love to do?” or “What will give me job satisfaction?” It is very, very difficult to actually drill down into one’s own being to discover what you really want. This deeper self understanding tends to come much more easily when other people ask you questions that dig more deeply into your persona and elicit those light bulb moments when you say, “Ah I see, yes, that is actually what I really enjoy about…..”

Asking questions that elicit deeper self-understanding is what good coaches do, we take you deeper into yourself to find the “hidden depths” of your being. Once you find what is meaningful for you it becomes much easier to build a satisfying and rewarding career.

What is the best way to turn what I love into a brand

How to turn what you love to do into a brand that makes money, blog by Life Coach David Ferrers shows how to make money by leveraging what you love doingThis is about how to make money doing what you love to do. After all you don’t want to become like the artist starving in his attic. You don’t want to do what you love and live in poverty, do you? You want to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labours. You want to live a life that has meaning and fulfilment whilst being able to enjoy the experiences that the world has to offer.

I come across too many people who are doing what they love to do, but are stressed by the lack of money in their lives. This is how to make sure that you don’t join them.

Anything that you love doing can be turned into a means of earning a living. A friend who loved wine opened a restaurant that saved lovely, fruity wines and made a fortune. Another friend who loved helping people to develop their lives became a corporate trainer and prospered. The Apple empire was built on the premise of making technology simple for ordinary users. Emily loves horses, she got a job in a livery yard and became the manager in short time. David was only a moderate professional golfer, but he became the go-to teacher for other professional players and made a fortune.

The First Question You Need to Answer to Turn Love Into Prosperity

Answer this: “what do people NEED from what I love doing?”

Note well the word NEED! It is NEED that drives customers to buy. When prospects only want something they might be prepared to wait. But when they NEED something they feel compelled – they MUST have it NOW!

So, “what do people NEED from what I love doing?”

The Two Types of Motivation That Drive Customers

Human beings are motivated in two basic ways.

They move when they feel pain or think that they might feel pain. They will take action to avoid pain. Imagine holding your hand in the flame of a candle. As soon as you feel the pain you will quickly withdraw your hand. The pain is causing you to act. Pain makes people move AWAY from the source of pain. This is why migrants leave their home countries and trek across deserts in search of a less painful existence. They are not travelling towards the promised land, they are travelling away from the pain in their homelands.

The second type of motivation is pleasure. People actively seek out ways of experiencing pleasure. A young girl who has been invited to a party will see a dress in a shop window and just know that she needs that dress in order to feel like the stand out girl at tha party. A gourmand will see a buffet table and move, as if magnetised, towards the plentiful food. The Ebay business is built largely on people’s need to avoid paying over the odds.

You need to decide, are you going to motivate people by offering to cure their pain? Or, are you going to offer them pleasure beyond their wildest dreams?

The Second Answer That Will Transform What You Love Doing Into Prosperity

The next question to which you need to find an answer is: “How do I make my product or service superior, in some way, to the other products out there?”

Start by looking at the products or services with which you will be competing. Make a list of all the products you know about and then ask about each one: “what are they doing that makes people buy from them?”

Often it is something quite simple that makes products successful. With restaurants it is often the location and the menu that works for them. A yoga teacher I know is successful because her students like her (she smiles a lot) and she doesn’t make them do anything too extreme. A marketing manager for a wedding venue wins lots of business because she exudes enthusiasm for the venue. Alton Towers attracts millions of visitors because their rides are thrilling.

So, “what makes your product or service superior to its competitors?”

Make Your Advantage Your Brand

Once you know what gives your product or service an edge in the market you need to find a SYMBOL or a SLOGAN that describes your product and the advantage it offers.

For instance whilst the Apple logo tells you nothing about technology, it tells you a lot about Apple’s style and simplicity. John Lewis are “never knowingly undersold.” Estée Lauder offer to “magnify the beauty of your eyes.”

Just make sure that what you offer is believable.

Discover What You Love To Do

The First Secret of Success

Discover what you love to do and make it into a business blog by Life Coach David FerrersWhen you do what you love doing success follows naturally. You feel good about yourself and it becomes easy to do what you need to do to achieve your goal.

This is important because doing what does not come naturally causes stress. It is only when you use your natural skills and abilities that you feel relaxed and can enjoy what you are doing.

You can prosper, enjoy loving relationships and feel happy – all it takes is to be doing what you love to do. Whether you want to build an employed career or to work for yourself, the first secret of success is to love what you do.

You Become More Powerful When You Love What You Do

Love is one of the most powerful human feelings. It is probably the most powerful of the positive human emotions. When you feel love you are powerfully attracted to the object of your love. You are full of energy and determination. Love focusses your attention and fills you with the desire to make things happen.

When you’re in love with what you do you become completely fixated on the object of your love and filled with the energy to make it happen. You become a human being with a mission. Those who have a powerful vision and massive energy are the ones who succeed and find meaning in their lives.

Where Most People Go Wrong

When people find themselves feeling stressed and frustrated they often look around at what other people are doing and ask themselves questions like: “Is that something I could do?” and “Would I enjoy doing that?” and “Would I be able to get a job doing that?” or “Could I set up a business to do that?”

They are starting in the wrong place. They are looking at what others love doing. What you need to know first is, “what do I love doing that gives value to others?”

How To Discover What You Love To Do

You have to dig inside yourself, to notice the moments when you feel exceptionally good. Ask yourself: “What am I doing when that great feeling arises?”

You have several choice about how you can do this:

  1. You can either spend a lot of time observing yourself during your daily activities and noticing the highlight moments. This is hard to do because you are living through an ongoing event and many other things will distract you.
  2. You can sit with a pencil and paper bringing to mind and writing down the occasions when you felt especially good. You will find lots of tips on how to do this in the Amazon book Create The Life You Want.
  3. You can do the same exercise with a friend, helping each other. Most people who try this find that it is very easy to become distracted and to not take the exercise seriously.
  4. You can attend a workshop where you will be led through the process by an experienced life coach who has helped hundreds of other people. Here your search for meaningful moments will be much wider to make sure you do not miss anything. Then your choices of what you love doing will be rigorously tested. By the end of the day you will be clear about what you love to do – Discover Your Passion 1-Day Workshop.

Of course, you can simply go on doing what you are going now, in which case nothing in your life will change. Or, you can discover what you love to do and find success and fulfilment.

The choice is yours, you can go on feeling stressed and frustrated or you can act now!

What is the best way to develop a success mindset?

You can develop a success mindset just by making a few changes in the way that you thinkMost successful people are known for being open minded. They are learners. They treat each new experience as an opportunity to learn. They actively engage in conversation and debate in order to examine their opinions and ideas. They read about their main interests but also read widely in order to understand the points of view of others. They attend seminars and other learning forums. They are constantly seeking to develop and update themselves.

Conversely unsuccessful people tend to have closed minds. They are stuck with their opinions. They are averse to anything that is outside of their comfort zone. They become aggressive when their opinions are challenged. The idea of change in any shape or form is anathema to them. They lack daring, the courage to explore different worlds, new ways of doing things.

If there is one thing that defines failure it has to be a lack of adventure – unwillingness to explore. To look for ways to improve yourself, to see what the world has to offer.

The Success Mindset

Successful people are not necessarily more intelligent than others. Neither are they always more knowledgeable. What marks them out is that they are positive that they can make a difference, that they can achieve results – and they are prepared to put themselves on the line to prove it.

Successful people are always clear about where they’re going. They’re not just going to the races, they’re going to Ascot races.

They know the benefit that they will get from achieving their goal. This may be a feeling, or greater status, or an improvement in their reputation.

They have a plan for how they will get there. Yes, successful people are always planning and scheming to make their vision their reality.

To a successful person obstacles are just challenges that they must find a way around, over or through. The one certainty is that they will not prevent the attainment of the goal. They are prepared to change direction, if that is required. They’re even prepared to change themselves, if that is necessary.

The success mindset recognises that change is a constant in life. Hence they are always ready to change and adapt to new situations. For them this is a major reason why learning is so important. They must be ready for whatever shows up.

For the same reason they make sure that they are always closely connected to experts. They make sure that their network includes experts in many different fields so that they can always ask an expert when they are uncertain of what to do next.

Successful people work hard. And their hard work is purposeful, well directed.

How You Can Develop A Success Mindset

If you have been brought up in an environment where negative thinking is prevalent, or you are surrounded by people who express negative thoughts, you have to make a conscious effort to change your mindset. If you go on as you are now, you will always remain as you are now.

First you need to decide what you want to become. Set yourself a target. When Leo Burnett started the advertising agency that still bears his name, he set the target: “Create the best advertising in the world – bar none!”

Once you have decided what you want to be, make a note of the benefit you will get from being that person. (In Leo’s case this was the sheer fun of being able to produce excellent ads day in and day out.)

Then you need to notice what you do now. You need to watch your thoughts and listen to what you say. The moment you become aware of a negative thought or of negative speech, ask yourself: “what is a positive way to think about this or to say this?” When you do this constantly, it will become your habit to notice yourself and to change.

Finally you need to start educating yourself. Become an expert in your field of endeavour. Become an expert at using a Success Mindset. Read. Go on courses. All successful people start by getting themselves clear about what they want to become. It’s time to be 100% clear about what you want to become – join our Discover Your Passion 1-Day Workshop.
