How To Break Free and Be Happy

In our middle years we get tangled up in a web of debt, work, relationships and responsibilities. They shackle us to living mainly to fulfil our commitments. We are caged in, not free to express ourselves. Our spirit is confined, but this does not stop it from clamouring for release. Frustration and a sense that something important is lacking in our lives grows inside of us like a cancer. We know that we are not fulfilling our potential. Dissatisfaction can make us grumpy but it does not help us to see a way out of our predicament.

Over seven years between 2011 and 2018 the British Office for National Statistics asked more than one million citizens to rate their levels of life satisfaction, self-worth, happiness and anxiety on a scale of one to ten. Analysis of the results carried out by the Resolution Foundation found that people’s levels of happiness peaked at the ages of 16 and 70. In the years between people’s levels of happiness formed a “U” curve which reaches its low point in our mid fifties. It is only after the age of 70 that the average person starts to make up for the lost happiness that went missing in their middle years. See graph below:

It is important to bear in mind that these figures are only averages, some people do seem to be able to live the dream. Their lives appear to be exciting, fulfilling and full of interest, happiness and prosperity. How do they do that? Many appear to have ample supplies of money. Money can certainly oil the wheels, but it doesn’t, of itself, solve the problems that many seem to experience. Other research shows that money comes as a result good life satisfaction rather than being the cause of life satisfaction. In other words those who have broken free are likely to be enjoying what they are doing and they therefore earn more money.

Finding ways to break free from the slavery of commitment and life rules invented by other people so that you can express yourself and find happiness has been the mission of Self-Realisation Coach David Ferrers for over 25 years. How To Feel Happy

What you need to realise is that you have a choice. You can choose to be happy or unhappy.

This sounds almost too simple to be true, but it is true. Think about it like this: “Whose feelings are your feelings?” Yours, right. “Who creates your feelings?” You do, right. What could be simpler then than for you to create the feelings that you want.

Now, here’s the problem. You have an innate resistance to creating your feelings. You have an expectation that something has to happen in order for you to feel happy. You have grown up thinking that it has to be your birthday, or you have an exciting date, or it is Christmas time in order for you to feel happy. But this is simply not the case. All of these events or occasions are simply triggers that set off your happy feelings. The actual feelings are entirely yours.

You can trigger a happy feeling at any time, all you have to do is make the decision, “I will feel happy now.” That’s it!

This is what Groovy People do. We simply take charge of our minds and decide how we wish to feel at any given time. We don’t rely on other people or events to trigger our happiness – we do this ourselves.

This is just a short article you can get a lot more detail of how to make yourself happy from my book Feeling Groovy.

How to Make Your Life Enjoyable

It’s really quite simple – your life can be filled with fun, love and enjoyment or it can crammed full of stress, anxiety and darkness. It’s a simple choice that you can make at any time.

Should you decide to make your life enjoyable the first step is to decide what “enjoyable” actually means to you. Does it mean lazing on a beach all day, or does it mean achieving a long held ambition, or does it mean playing with your kids, or does it mean watching TV all day long. The trick here is to think about what you would be doing every day for most of the day that would be enjoyable.

A word of advice; it may be that you don’t have to change a great deal about your life. It is possible, for instance, that simply by changing your attitude towards your work you could make it a lot more enjoyable. Or you might just need to renegotiate your contract of employment. In this context I should point out that work is one of the main areas where we can achieve goals and gain a sense of fulfilment, both of which are enjoyable aspects of life.

Once you have decided that you want to make your life enjoyable you need to create a vision of how you will behave in order for your life to be enjoyable. “What are you like when you are enjoying life? What do you look like? How do you feel?”

Then, when you have created your vision of how you want to feel and behave so that you can enjoy your life, you need to take charge of your mind. First you need to be constantly alert, aware of what you are doing and how you are doing it. Being aware of your actions allows you to make the constant corrections to your behaviour that will keep you in the correct groove.

Over time, as you do these simple things constantly and consistently, you will form the habit of enjoying your life.

This is just a short article you can get a lot more detail of how to make your life enjoyable from my book Feeling Groovy.

No. 4 – Awareness of Your Behaviour

Your behaviour is your body language, your gestures and your speech. It is what you do and the meanings you convey to yourself and others by your actions. It is how you move around and get things done.

The movements of your body are generated by your thoughts which dictate what your body does. Your feelings dictate the level of energy that you input into your actions.

Once your thoughts have sent instructions to your body telling it what to do they then monitor your actions to make sure that you are carrying out their instructions correctly.

Therefore your bodily actions feed into your mind and can influence your thoughts and your feelings. More on this in a later article.

Groovy people are very aware of their body actions. They check whether their facial expressions and body language are conveying the meaning that they intend by watching and listening to the feedback that they receive from their audience.

Today’s Exercise: at regular intervals, tune in to your behaviour. Watch what you’re doing. Notice your gestures. Notice your body language. Listen to what you are saying and the tone in which you say it. Being aware of your of your body language and speech is an important skill to have. It will help you to become whatever you wish to become. Groovy people pay close attention to their what they are doing and the way in which they are doing it so that they can always improve on their behaviour. Groovy people are sensible of their bodily actions.

No. 3 – Awareness of Your Feelings

What you are feeling matters greatly for two reasons:

  1. Your feelings make your life happy or unhappy.
  2. They provide the level of energy for what you do.

It helps the quality of your life when you are aware of what you are feeling at any given time.

If you are experiencing a good, positive feeling you can improve the quality of your life by intensifying the feeling.

Alternatively, when you are experiencing an unhappy or negative feeling you can change it in order to improve the quality of your life.

Your feelings are entirely your own. You create your feelings. You can decide whether you wish to go on feeling any particular emotion. You can then decide whether to change the way you are feeling or whether to intensify the level at which you are experiencing that feeling.

Most people don’t think at all about their feelings, they just accept that whatever they are feeling is a natural consequence of what is happening in their life. But this is not so. You always have a choice. It can sometimes be hard to change a feeling, but it is always possible.

Today’s exercise: at regular intervals, tune in to your feelings and ask yourself, “am I enjoying this feeling? If so do I want to enhance the feeling? If I am not enjoying feeling this way, how would I like to be feeling?” Knowing what is going on in your feelings is one of the most important skills you can have. It is only when you make yourself conscious of what is going on in your emotions that you are able to gain control of this important source of positive happiness and energy.

Being aware of their feelings and taking charge of the way they feel is what groovy people do.
