Curing the Recession Blues

by David Ferrers

recession-bluesHow do you shine a light on the recession blues that’s so bright it melts the blues away?

If you’re one of those who started out at the beginning of the recession thinking: “it won’t be that bad,” and then found your confidence seeping away as the wells where you had expected to find work ran dry, until eventually a great dark cloud descended over your world; you are not alone.

Neither have you done anything wrong.

Neither are you a bad person.

Neither are you worthless.

It’s just that the world around you has changed dramatically. Let’s face it, the world needed to change. We were all living on borrowed time. Too much debt, too much greed, excessive carbon in the atmosphere, too little concern for the starving millions, aids, malaria, despots and the rising population.

We were all behaving like hedonists without a care for our fellow man or the planet on which we live.

That situation had to change. We were out of balance with our environment.

Now we have to get back into balance. And that means that we have to do things differently.

That is the challenge!

You have to find a way to be of service in a way that will benefit your environment and your family.

It is my belief, and it is working for many of my clients, that the cures for our ills are all around us.

It has long been established that sunshine makes us feel better. That’s why so many people take summer holidays in places where they can enjoy the sun. Similarly bright light will make you feel better. So, when the dark cloud of depression descends, switch on the lights or go out into the sunshine.

Music makes you feel better, so play music while you work. Move around to the music to help dissolve bad feelings.

Keep company with cheerful, optimistic people who will make you feel better. Avoid miserable people who will talk you down to their level.

And to earn money – think, “who can I help?” and “what can I do for them?”

Then wrap, “what I can do for them” in the sexiest suit of clothes you can dream up.

As I wrote this post I was concurrently swapping emails with a client working on his elevator statement. It usually takes time and feedback to make these statements exciting. But once you are clear in your mind about how valuable you are, you will find it easier to convince people to hire you.
