The focus must be on results. Guessing, opinions and theories are OUT. The opinions of experts, associations, gurus, governments, employees or even our own best thoughts, ideas and guesses do NOT count. Remember, this is your money you’re spending - you need a return on your investment. The only strategies to follow are those that make more money than you spend.

There are five fundamentals to all successful marketing. Each one is of equal importance:

1. Strip Your Customers - develop and intimate “under their skin” understanding of the needs, desires and interests that make them buy.

2. Bait Your Hook - microscopic analysis of your product or service to discover the unique benefits that draw customers to it like a magnet. Tip: other people will nearly always see things that you don’t see yourself.

3. Excite Your Customers - generate a message that attracts, excites and convinces your customers that they must have your offering.

4. Stand in the Traffic - place your offering where your customers cannot avoid seeing it and starting to get excited about the prospect of ownership.

5. Keep on Calling - you may have to call on each prospect five times or even ten times to make a sale. Keep calling and keep offering more and more exciting inducements to buy.

Direct Response is the ONLY effective way to market. Why? Because it is the only MEASURABLE way to market your product or service. Because it is the only way you can repeat your messages and know that you are not wasting your money.

The Six Most Common Marketing Mistakes

1. The belief that “my customers are different”. People are moved to respond by the exact same collection of factors. Their emotions are the same, they respond to arguments and benefits the same. It doesn’t matter whether they are young or old, rich or poor, educated or ignorant, politicians or policemen they share the same collection of feelings.

2. Assumptions - to assume because your competitor is doing something that it works. Or because an expert suggests something that it will work. Or because you read it in a book it will work. Or, or, or - the only way is to test, test, test until you know.

3. Long copy doesn’t work - the people who MEASURE the effect of every £ spent virtually never rely on few words. Would this message make you buy? “Here’s my product. Give me your money.” To create customers you have to make them FEEL right and allow them to RATIONALISE to themselves that they are making a sensible decision.

4. Cold calling - if people aren’t interested, if they do not have a need, if they’re not in the mood to buy, no amount of cold calling will persuade them differently. This is particularly true if they don’t know you. It makes more sense to spend your money generating leads from interested people than to waste it calling people and interrupting them as they’re going about their business.

5. A picture is worth a thousand words - want to bet? I will bet my thousand words against your best picture any time you wish. When it comes to selling words say more than pictures. When did you last stand in front of a customer and just show them a picture?

6. If I spend more on marketing I will make more sales - you might, but only if the extra expenditure was well aimed and the message was a proven winner.
