Meditation for Stress Management

“Are you distracted by outward cares? Then allow yourself a space of quiet, wherein you can add to your knowledge of the Good and learn to curb your restlessness.”

    Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor,
    AD 121 – 180

Put simply meditation is about control of your mind. In the event that you are feeling stressed, it is about regaining control of your mind.

The Buddha described Nirvana as the state of perfect peace that is free from craving, anger and other afflictive states. The meditator is at peace with the world, has compassion for all and gives up obsessions and fixations. Source: Wikipedia.

The reward of meditation is “the state of perfect peace.”

In the frenetic world in which we live, peace of mind is often hard to achieve. Our minds are often filled with anxieties, thoughts and the needs of our jobs. These distractions seem to fill every part of our minds and consume our thoughts.

So, how do you escape from these all-consuming thoughts and find peace of mind?

Meditation is a good way to escape because you can meditate anywhere. Contrary to popular belief you do not need to be in any special place, or have perfect quiet, or wear any special clothes to meditate.

Meditation is about control of your mind and you can win control at any time that you wish – IF you will just practice and condition yourself to do so.

The secret is to practice. As the sages say: “you must start (meditating) and go on,” until you master the art.

You can start by just sitting quietly and allowing your mind to focus on a single object, like the flame of a candle.

We would recommend that you attend a meditation class or two in order to have more detail explained and to get some practice. Once you know what to do it is simply a matter of practice.

Meditation is a skill worth mastering for today’s busy leader.
