What is NLP?
NLP is a way to Achieve with Ease. It is a way to trigger the natural, in-built resources with which you were born in order to achieve what you want.
Anyone can achieve greatly improved results once they master the art of using NLP.
This is a very brief introduction to NLP. It includes two videos by Richard Bandler and John Grinder the co-founders of NLP which explain the philosophy and how nlp techniques work.
NLP is the study of excellent behaviour in a particular situation. The aim is to understand how an individual is achieving excellence so as to be able to reproduce similar thinking and behaviour in others.
“We take the very best of what people do, synthesise it down, make it learnable and share it with each other – that is NLP.” Richard Bandler
Therefore it is unlike training programmes that teach a single, structured way of doing things. NLP is about how to reach within yourself and activate your innate abilities.
NLP is about viewing what happens in situations and relationships and then diagnosing the behaviour that produces excellent results so that you can use it to enable others to achieve similar results.
NLP pays particular attention to identifying both the conscious and the unconscious thinking, language and behaviour that is so often the critical factor in the behaviour of influential and successful people.
By understanding the thinking (Neuro), language (Linguistic) and behaviour (Programming) of its most successful people an organisation can help those successful people to improve their own performance and enable others to perform at a similar level of excellence.
A key point to understand is that any individual’s performance is never universally excellent. Each of us will achieve different levels of performance in different situations. With the use of NLP we can raise our game in any area of our lives.
“NLP is a way of creating your own sense of direction, of harnessing the resources that are naturally yours, and of influencing others to collaborate with you.” Sue Knight
NLP Stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming
Neuro = your neurological system, how you use your senses of sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing to interpret your experiences into conscious and unconscious thought processes. It expresses how your mind and your physiology work as one system.
Linguistic = how you use language to express your experiences to both yourself and other people. You express who you are and how you think by the language patterns that you use.
Programming = how you have coded your experiences into the steps you need to take to achieve outcomes. Your personal programmes dictate the results you achieve. These programmes dictate your behaviours and therefore control the way you experience life.
Using NLP to Create Change
By identifying the way that you think and the filters that you use we can develop an understanding of how you think and behave. Next you choose a skill or behaviour at which you would like to achieve excellence. Then, using your own learning strategy, you can develop the ability to think and behave in the desired manner.
The ability to create thinking and behaviour changes in others is a highly developed skill. For best results you should work with an experienced NLP Practitioner.
