Responsibilities of a Coach

When you consider employing the services of a leadership coach, what responsibility should you expect them to take for the transaction?

In my view the answer is simple. The responsibilities of the coach should be to:

      1. ensure that you achieve the outcome that you want to achieve. For example, you may wish to become an inspirational communicator. In this instance it would be the responsibility of the coach to ensure that you mastered the use of The Communication Cycle and that it’s use becomes your habitual behaviour.
      2. To set up a method of measuring how well your coaching is progressing. And to check up from time to time, for up to 12 months, that those new behaviours are continuing to be used effectively.
      3. To bring to the coaching sessions appropriate knowledge, tools and authority to enable you to change your behaviours so that you transform your performance permanently.
      4. To create a relaxed atmosphere in which the dialogue between client and coach flows naturally to make learning easy.
      5. To help you find opportunities where you will be able to implement and practice new leadership techniques in order to build confidence in their efficacy and to practice the use of those new techniques.

    Why Transforming Performance is Essential

People often ask me why I call myself a Transformational Leadership Coach. The answer is simple, I don’t believe in change for change’s sake. I believe in change that transforms people and situations.

The word “transformation” means “the dynamic process whereby people and strategies change and adapt to external or internal forces.”

The key words are “dynamic process.” Dynamic means, “characterized by action or forcefulness or force of personality.” Process means, “course of action, method of operation, series of changes.”

In other words, transformational leadership is about the dynamic process of changing people to meet the challenges presented by changes in their environment.

    Why Outstanding Communication is Essential

I regard it as my responsibility to make the managers I coach outstanding communicators because no-one willingly follows dull people.

The reason I created a business version of The Communication Cycle was to ensure that all the leaders I coach master the 6 essentials of good communication:

      1. Correct Aim – create a charismatic vision,
      2. Composition – bring the charismatic vision to life,
      3. Transmit – send out the vision in a way that inspires your audience,
      4. Feedback – listen to what people say about how they understood and interpreted your message,
      5. Analyse and Learn – use the feedback to learn the lessons,
      6. Improve – make it your business to continually improve your performance.

I hope that you can see form what I say here, from the testimonials on this site and the information I give about myself that I take the responsibilities of being a Leadership Coach very seriously.
