It’s true, not everything we say communicates the intended message to the listener. The diagram on the left shows information entering the ear, being processed by the brain and the heart (logic and emotion); but with a disconnected brain all that comes out of the mouth (the response) is smoke.
Poor Verbal Communication Skills Lead To Many Misunderstandings
The North Carolina State University has identified 4 learning styles: Active and Reflective, Sensing and Intuitive, Visual and Verbal and Sequential and Global.
We all tend to listen in accordance with our learning style and if the speaker is not giving us opportunities to learn in our preferred learning style we tend to miss a lot of what is being communicated. This is where many misunderstandings arise.
The the other major cause of misunderstandings from poor verbal communication is the result of people listening only from the point of their own preconceived opinions and not being open to new information. In these instances they have already programmed themselves to only hear what they want to hear.
How to Become a More Accurate Verbal Communicator
The experience of coaching many thousands of managers led me to the conclusion that accurate verbal communication is a vital ingredient of transformational leadership. When I developed the communication cycle one of my main considerations was to minimise misunderstandings and maximise accurate, inspirational communication in the workplace. My aim was to get people thinking more thoroughly before communicating.
Notice that the first action in the communication cycle is to be clear about the aim of your communication. This includes giving consideration to the outcome you want to result from the communication as well as the wants, needs and desires of the person with whom you intend to communicate.
The Secret of Improving Your Verbal Communication
The secret is very simple. It lies in the fourth part of The Communication Cycle – feedback. Feedback is invaluable because it tells you how well your communication was received, how well it was understood and whether it inspired the recipient to act. It also tells you what you need to improve upon in the future in order to increase the effectiveness of your verbal communications.
The great motivator Anthony Robbins repeatedly urges us that: “feedback is the breakfast of champions.” I like that phrase because it is memorable and inspirational.
If you actively seek feedback, pay attention to the feedback you receive and use it to improve your verbal communications, you cannot help but become more effective.

Verbal communication depends to a large extent on how you use the language; people that read and write more are often better at expressing themselves.
