Transformational Leadership is leading with an exciting, charismatic vision and communicating that vision so enthusiastically that you inspire your teams to work with an energy, intelligence, creativity and will to achieve that is well above that of which they thought themselves capable.
Transformational Leadership works best in situations where change or fresh impetus is required to recharge and re-energise groups of people.
President John F. Kennedy had a vision of the United States as the leader of the free world and he communicated that vision through the metaphor of the space race, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”
Martin Luther King had a vision of emancipation and he communicated it in one of the most famous speeches of all time which included the words, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
The charismatic vision expressed as his “dream” speech transformed the views of middle America and inspired millions of white Americans to join with black Americans to fight the injustice of segregation and claim their civil rights.
The reason why this speech has become legendary is that it is such a great example of a charismatic vision communicatied in a truly inpsirational manner.
Business leaders are rarely granted great public platforms on which to speak but Steve Jobs manages to inspire millions of Apple addicts to buy his latest “i” product at his annual San Francisco presentation.
The man who transformed the ailing Apple empire with his single-minded, charismatic vision of innovate world class, consistently imaged products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and now the iPad, garners millions of dollars of virtually free publicity by the sheer force of his presentation skills.
Transformational Leadership Theory
The exciting theory of transformational leadership is very simple. This is how it works:1. Create an exciting and charismatic vision for your company or project.
2. Communicate that vision with energy and inspiration to everyone involved in making the vision a reality.
3. Keep stirring the pot with enthusiasm and feedback.
4. Watch as confidence, ingenuity, energy and teamwork grows until a profitable outcome is achieved. (Click on the Transformational Leadership diagram above to see a full size illustration of how to practice this style of leadership.)
The way I see this is: “Good management creates the organisational framework that makes an outcome possible. Transformational Leadership fires up the engines of confidence, will power and enthusiasm to achieve the result.”
Transformational Leadership Style
Leaders often fail when they get bogged down in the day-to-day management of their business. They become too immersed in the detail and don’t allow themselves time focus and inspire on the big picture.
The transformational leader needs to simplify the leadership role so that the main focus of his activities is ensuring that the vision shines brightly to inspire the workforce. The leader becomes a transmitter of the vision.
For this reason a coach or mentor can be invaluable to help the leader see the wood for the trees.
