    Difficult Leadership Issues Managed Successfully

    Tim’s company had recently taken over a larger, yet somewhat old-fashioned rival. His company wanted Tim, a production manager, to take charge of a project to integrate the new factory into the more efficient production techniques which they employed.

    This was a situation he had never faced before, yet he had to find a way to persuade his new charges to change. He recognised that the employees would be feeling sensitive about having been taken over by a smaller rival and fearful of redundancies. He also knew that they would be set in their working ways.

    These were big challenges for Tim. He was keen to make the most of the opportunity that the situation offered, but at the same time he knew that he would have to tread carefully if he was going to manage the transition without causing a backlash of resentment that could scupper his efforts to introduce new working practices.

    Tim was a well qualified engineer and he had studied management techniques, attending every management course his employer offered, but this situation was outside of anything he had encountered before. He recognised that there would be a lot of “human feelings” to be managed and he knew that his engineering training did not provide the best foundation for the management of feelings.

    Tim decided to find a leadership coach with whom he could talk over the situation and develop a strategy for managing this situation and the feelings in his new teams.

    In the conversations that Tim had with his coach he was able to develop a strategy for managing the changeover to new production methods that, in a very short space of time, won the enthusiastic cooperation of his new charges and quickly improved production techniques in the plant.
