What To Do About Career Frustration
The first important point is that your feeling of frustration is a negative feeling. This is not all bad because your frustration gives you a strong motivation to move on from your current situation. However, this is what I call “away motivation,” it will only motivate you away from your current situation. It will not propel you towards the much better career path that will give you work satisfaction and earn you more money.
This aphorism was widely used by the ancient Egyptians and Greek philosophers like Plato. So it has a strong wisdom pedigree. But, how do you get to know yourself and why is this important?
The answer is to observe yourself, to get to know what you love to do. Make a note of the times when you feel especially happy, what’s going on? Notice when you feel a sense of achievement, what are you doing when that feeling arises?
You may be aware that your energy levels go up and down during the day. Sometimes you feel lethargic or bored, and any sort of activity seems to require a special effort. Yet there are other times when you feel full of beans, you actively seek out things to do. What made you feel that way? What happened just before you got that surge of energy? These are key moments in self-understanding because they tell you what you love to do.
Why Loving What You Do Is The Key To Career Success
When you love what you do you are filled with purpose and energy, you can’t wait to get down to work. The work is intellectually stimulating, challenging and rewarding. At the end of the day you have a sense of having done something meaningful with your life.
Loving what you do is very similar to loving another person. You get the same surges of energy. You have the same desire to be closely engaged with what you do. You look for opportunities to please your colleagues and clients.
Can you see how being in love with what you do would be completely different and much more life-enhancing than the frustration that you feel at the moment?
I have coached over one thousand people during the last twenty five years. Many of these clients initially suffered from career frustration which they have managed to transform into career satisfaction. I regard the ability to make this transformation as so important to our sense of well-being and happiness that I have written a book about it which is available on Amazon. It was reading books like this one that started me on the journey from a corporate career that was becoming increasingly frustrating to starting my own business thirty years ago.
How To Ensure That You Choose The Right Career
Like many others I started my personal journey to career satisfaction by doing research, Googling, reading books, blogs and magazine articles. All of this was helpful because it gave me the belief that it is possible to build a more rewarding career and create a better life for yourself.
However, I did not manage to take the important steps towards a better life until I started working with other people. The reason for this is quite simple. When you work on your own you tend to go on asking yourself the same questions, like, “what would I love to do?” or “What will give me job satisfaction?” It is very, very difficult to actually drill down into one’s own being to discover what you really want. This deeper self understanding tends to come much more easily when other people ask you questions that dig more deeply into your persona and elicit those light bulb moments when you say, “Ah I see, yes, that is actually what I really enjoy about…..”
Asking questions that elicit deeper self-understanding is what good coaches do, we take you deeper into yourself to find the “hidden depths” of your being. Once you find what is meaningful for you it becomes much easier to build a satisfying and rewarding career.
